Oscar Nominations Announced
Well, the nominations are out. A few surprises there. Robert Downey Jr. was actually nominated for an Oscar because of Tropic Thunder. Even though he won’t win (Heath Ledger also nominated), it’s pretty awesome. It’s so rare for the Academy to acknowledge comedic performances. Click the stupid jump to see the highlights with my thoughts:
Actor in a Leading Role
Richard Jenkins
The Visitor
Frank Langella
Frost/Nixon
Sean Penn
Milk
Brad Pitt
Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Mickey Rourke
The Wrestler
I can’t say I agree with the Brad Pitt nomination. He spent most of the movie observing things happen around him and had his face mapped on a body for half the movie. Langella was fantastic, as was Rourke
Supporting Actor
Josh Brolin
Milk
Robert Downey Jr.
Tropic Thunder
Philip Seymour Hoffman
Doubt
Heath Ledger
The Dark Knight
Michael Shannon
Revolutionary Road
“It was nice to just be nominated” is something every living person on this list is thinking.
Actress in a Leading Role
Anne Hathaway
Rachel Getting Married
Angelina Jolie
Changeling
Melissa Leo
Frozen River
Meryl Streep
Doubt
Kate Winslet
The Reader
I would guess either Meryl Streep or Kate Winslet, but Meryl Streep should be disqualified for having anything to do with Mamma Mia!
Supporting Actress
Amy Adams
Doubt
Penelope Cruz
Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Viola Davis
Doubt
Tarajai P. Henson
Ben Button
Marisa Tomei
The Wrestler
Wow, the Academy’s really a sucker for Benjamin Button.
Animated Feature Film
Bolt
Kung Fu Panda
Wall-E
Kung Fu Panda was suprisingly fun, but this is Wall-E (and Pixar’s) category.
Cinematography
Changeling
Ben Button
The Dark Knight
The Reader
Slumdog Millionaire
Slumdog was impressive for getting in tight spots with small cameras and capturing images I’ve never seen before, but did you see The Dark Knight in IMAX???
Directing
Ben Button
Frost/Nixon
Milk
The Reader
Slumdog Millionaire
I’d go with Danny Boyle and Slumdog on this one.
Makeup
Ben Button
Dark Knight
Hellboy II: The Golden Army
Oscar-Nominated Hellboy II! Just wanted to say that once. Benjamin Button will surely take this.
Best Picture
Ben Button
Frost/Nixon
Milk
The Reader
Slumdog Millionaire
Snubs for The Wrestler and The Dark Knight. Benjamin Button was not the best movie of the year, nor was Frost/Nixon. I can’t speak for Milk or The Reader, so I’ll go with Slumdog.
Writing (Adapted)
Ben Button
Doubt
Frost/Nixon
The Reader
Slumdog Millionaire
Still need to see Doubt and The Reader.
Screenplay (original)
Frozen River
Happy-Go-Lucky
In Bruges
Milk
Wall-E
This is an interesting category because most of America hasn’t seen any of these movies (except Wall-E)
