DVD Tuesday…On Wednesday

It’s DVD Tuesday, and while we don’t have anything quite as exciting as “King of Kong” there are a couple movies worth trying out.

Across the Universe

I’m a die-hard Beatles fan. There’s not a day that goes by where I don’t listen to a Beatles song. I re-watch the Anthology every couple years. I even tracked down “The Magical Mystery Tour” DVD, knowing it was intentionally being kept from the public. I sat through an hour of that, and it felt like sixty four years. But one Beatles movie I’ve yet to see is “Across the Universe.” Everyone I’ve talked to has two very different opinions. The first is, “This movie is rotten. Amateur-hour visual gags so literal that when they sing about Maxwell’s Silver Hammer, you actually see Maxwell’s Silver Hammer.” The second is, “Inventive, emotional, and hey, great songs!” A movie this polarizing is something you have to just experience for yourself, and since I’ve been on the Mystery Tour, I can handle anything.

VERDICT: RENT IT, IN CASE YOU SHARE OPINION #1!

2 Days In Paris

This movie is written and directed by Julie Delpy, who’s best known from Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise/Before Sunset movies. Those movies co-starred Ethan Hawke. This time, she’s walking around with Adam Goldberg and they most likely share a lot of witty banter. The basic story is this: A boyfriend/girlfriend travel to Paris to visit her parents, and continue to run into her ex-boyfriends. Not too deep in story, but I have a feeling it’s more about the witty banter. And you know what? I like witty banter! I’ve yet to see this movie, but have no problem renting it. Your decision may depend on how long you can stand Adam Goldberg.

VERDICT: RENT IT IF YOU’RE PRO-GOLDBERG!

Seems like a pretty weak DVD Tuesday, er Wednesday. Luckily I still have Death Sentence sitting at home from my last Blockbuster delivery. Nothing spells success in a movie like Kevin Bacon.
